Over a dozen sleeping pods (shelters no more than 8' x 12') are being built through early December to prototype light, cheap, and quick to build shelter to support houseless communities. And we need your help!
The designs are inspired from an earlier community forum lead by houseless community leaders and villages with support from advocacy organizations, all within the network of the Village Coalition. The sleeping pods being built have been designed by architects, designers, and activists from around Portland and facilitated by the Partners On Dwelling (POD) initiative.
The build will finish early December for a display on the 9th,10th, and 11th, and afterward the sleeping pods will go to folks in need.
Here is our current ask for help:
1) Volunteers to help build the pods at a community warehouse in north Portland! Tools and snacks provided! While we need seasoned builders to make sure we reach our deadline, we also want folks new to building interested in learning and supporting. Building times will be Mon-Fri 5 pm-10 pm and Sat & Sun 10 am-10 pm.
2) Volunteers to staff our welcome desk at the warehouse! During our open hours we need a volunteer to hang out at our welcome desk to sign people in, orient new folks to the space, and support build teams if they need a hand. We are hoping for a commitment of 2.5 - 5 hours per shifts.
3) General event support! Help publicizw our need for volunteers, cook a meal or bring snacks, donate funds to cover costs, or any other way you can think of to help!
