The City Repair Project | |
The Community Supported Activist Program is an innovative strategy to meet The City Repair Project's needs for hiring full-time staff to coordinate our project and volunteer programs. City Repair's work is based on the idea that it takes us all to build community, and that if we each contribute a small amount each month, together we can build our ecologically- and socially-friendly neighborhoods and cities.
The City Repair Project is receiving an enormous amount of recognition city- and nationwide for our straightforward yet innovative approaches for addressing urban issues. In order to fulfill our potential and meet the growing demand for assistance with Intersection Repair projects and community events, it is time to fund coordinators to develop our programs and cultivate our capacity.
The Community Supported Activist Program is a mechanism to meet our needs and do so in the spirit of our work. Our projects are based on the abundance generated by building community relationships, and in turn our work creates avenues for unlocking even more abundance of resources, ideas and relationships.
Simply put, if 200 people contribute a small amount to City Repair each month, then we can fund staff to provide this organizational management.
Suggested contributions are $10-20/month.
These positions will not supplant our strong volunteer base that has been and will continue to drive our projects; the coordinators will serve as facilitators to help the organization grow into its next phase.
The CSA program will begin by funding two program coordinators to address our foremost needs. The positions and their key roles are as follows:
Placemaking Program Coordinator; oversee and support City Repair's placemaking program, which includes:
--Trainings and workshops
--Tools/publications
--Technical Assistance
--Networking opportunities
--Events
Volunteer Coordinator; oversee and support City Repair's volunteer base, including:
--Trainings for new volunteers
--Leadership development
--Project mentoring and support
The CSA program is directly supported by small contributions from individuals and local businesses. These monthly contributions will comprise the living-wage stipends for two program coordinators.
Here's how the City Repair "honor system" works: we are honored by the work you do in this world and by your participation in building strong local communities, and you can honor us by contributing what feels comfortable to you. This could mean time, resources, connections, ideas or funds. Monetary contributions will directly support the program, but in-kind donations are also appreciated. In order to stabilize the program, we ask that you make a six-month commitment of support. See chart for options.
All donations towards the CSA are tax deductible, as City Repair is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Checks should be written to The City Repair Project, memo CSA. Direct deposit can easily be set up by providing a voided check.
You'll receive quarterly newsletters about the accomplishments of the CSAs and the City Repair Project. We will also host parties and gatherings for our supporters to meet and celebrate our successes!

Being funded by the community is potent for a few reasons. First, it allows more people to participate and truly make a difference in the work of City Repair to transform our cities. Second, it allows our community to be the expert and decision-maker for what we need and want. Third, this program is a living example of City Repair theory and philosophy of localization, collaboration and community power. We hope this example opens doors for others
The program is based on the model of Community Supported Agriculture, in which individuals and families support a farmer year-round, participate in the work of the farm, build strong community and share in the bounty of the harvest. The Community Supported Activist Program brings this model to the realm of urban community development.
The City Repair Project is a grassroots non-profit organization that engages people to create public gathering places and events that honor the interconnection of human communities and the natural world.
We facilitate artistic and ecologically-oriented placemaking through projects that :
Our work is inspired by the idea that localization (of culture, of economy, of decision-making) is a necessary foundation for a more community-oriented and ecologically sustainable society.
