City Riparian will engage neighbors in a collective process to design and install forest gardens and other permaculturally-informed landscapes in the commons. In doing so, they will incubate both social and natural capital, furthering their connection to each other and their place. Not only will we call Portland the City of Villages, we will also create a place of abundant food and water resources that we will call the City Riparian.

This year we are facilitating the installation of a forest garden, hosting workshops that will further the ecological consciousness of the participants, and providing nourishing food, drink, education and entertainment during two nighttime events (Oct. 12th and 13th)

We are planting the seeds of an event that will perennialize and become yet another event in the emergent “Village Cycle.” As the seasonal patterns of this place create a niche for the VBC at the end of May (school out, weather conducive to fun in the sun and dry enough for cob,) so too do the patterns create a natural space in time for a city-wide planting festival in the Fall, with its abundance of rain and cool temperatures that welcome plants into the ground.

We are consciously engaged in an evolutionary process to expand the range of solutions that we can leverage toward making Portland a City of Villages. The abundance of social capital that has been created by City Repair can be reinvested to tackle issues of food security, watershed restoration, access to traditional medicines, and rediscovering our role in the vast ecologies of which we are but a small part. The work of City Riparian will speak to these issues and many more.
