Mid-September Newsletter

Sunday 9/13 Event Update:

In our end of August newsletter we had a reflection and updates from our Village Building Convergence artist in residence, Michael Bernard Stevenson Jr., which included mentioning a Time Based Art Festival event, "Grandmother(s)’s Kitchen Presents: Bring Your Own Blanket Free Community Picnic and Discussion," they we're scheduled to facilitate today (9/13).

With the Portland air quality hazardous due to regional forest fires, the picnic is postponed. Keep an eye on the PICA or Michael's IG for updates on rescheduling. PICA also has an IG post with some ways to support folks affected by the wildfires click here.

Michael does have another event, Tin Can Phone, for the Time Based Art Festival that will be a live stream on 9/27 at 10 am. Click here for registration.

Tin Can Phone is a radio-based project that originated inside the Columbia River Correctional Institution and is being supported by KBOO Community Radio in Portland, Oregon. The initial collaboration took place over the course of a few months in which Armon Poostpasand, Queaz Otti, and Joseph Rosenberger (all inmates at the same time) worked with Artist Michael Bernard Stevenson Jr. to interview their peers inside the prison. Starting this summer, all members of the project have since been released and are actively recording the podcast for release on KBOO this fall. As part of PICA's TBA Institute, the Tin Can Phone team will meet online to record an episode of Tin Can Phone live with an opportunity for participants to have questions answered as part of the show.

Youth Power PDX Core Organizer Application Fall 2020

In July 2020, a core group of youth organizers (Cor3) produced a month-long event called 'Speak Up! Sing Out!' that centered on youth power. The event hosted 5 radio shows on XRAY.FM, 4 musical performances on IG Live, and 3 discussions on youth intersectionality. Cor3 was supported by a coalition of adult allies from a variety of organizations including Friends of Noise and City Repair under the banner - Youth Power PDX (YPP).

This Autumn, YPP is excited to recruit a new core youth group for a Fall event that continues to reflect and amplify intersectional youth power! We'll have a special newsletter on this opportunity next week, and the application is live with more information click here. We will also keep our IG page active with information moving forward.
